Two types of scan
Body composition scan
Measures lean muscle, fat and bone across your arms, legs, trunk and whole body. Popular with athletes and anyone tracking training or weight-loss progress.
Bone density scan
Checks for signs of osteopenia and osteoporosis using a very low radiation dose, about a tenth of a chest X-ray. A doctor’s referral is needed when booking.
Quick and comfortable
You lie on a padded table while the scanner passes over you. The scan itself usually takes under 10 minutes.
Good to know
- Not suitable if you are, or might be, pregnant.
- For a body composition scan, avoid food and drink for 2 hours beforehand.
- Wear clothing without metal zips, buttons or jewellery.
